Meenmutty Waterfalls in Wayanad

Meenmutty is the star waterfall in Wayanad, and in North Kerala. It is the largest and most spectacular waterfall in Wayanad. “Meenmutty” in Malayalam means “fish block” and the name might have come from the fact that fish can’t go up the fall.

Meenmutty in Wayanad is a 3 stage water fall with total cascade length of around 300 M. This is the second largest waterfall in Kerala and the largest fall in Wayanad and in North Kerala, and a very important water fall in the south west side of Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot.

Located inside verdant forest, you get an opportunity to trek around 2 KM to reach the waterfall from the Ooty-Calicut Inter State road, through dense forest. To reach each of the 3 stages, extra trek required through dangerous terrain and the total length of the trek from the road would be around 3. 9 KM. The trek path is dangerous and exhausting but it can provide a refreshing experience.

Major Attractions Around:
Excellent Treks and beautiful drive on the Ooty Road; Breathtaking views of tea plantations around. Chembra Peak, Sunrise Valley (Neelimala), the Glass Temple, Koottamunda (Vellarimala) nearby, Kanthanpara and Soochipara waterfalls. 

Instructions:
Avoid plastics. Don’t throw waste around the water falls. Keep the surrounding and trek paths clean. Don’t disturb wildlife. Don’t expect wildlife to appear in front of you always. Wildlife would not appear on demand and they don’t know about entrance fee paid by you to see them.

Location & Distances:
12 Km from Meppadi.
25 KM South East from Kalpetta.
Travel by the Ooty-Calicut road towards Ooty, and take the diversion at the indication to the water fall.

Best Season to Visit:
November-April. Best Period: June-August, when the waterfall will be at peak level, but this can be dangerous /adventurous because of heavy rains and slippery path and leeches on the way. So be cautious!!
